Eckerd schedules an active calendar for those interested in art, film, music, theatre, and creative writing by tapping local and national talent for on-campus programs and appearances. Elliott Gallery displays rotating exhibitions by current students, faculty, alumni, and regionally- and nationally-known artists. Triton's Pub offers an intimate space for poetry jams and open mic nights. Bininger Theatre is home to faculty and student produced performances. The Dan and Mary Miller Auditorium is a state-of-the-art facility screening films from Eckerd's popular International Cinema Series every Friday night and the eight-day Environmental Film Festival each spring. Fox Hall is as a multi-purpose venue that hosts distinguished speakers and noted performers as part of the Presidential Events Series and College Program Series. Recent guests have included feminist Gloria Steinem, humanitarian Elie Wiesel, seasoned journalist Juan Williams, environmentalist Peter Singer, Hotel Rwanda's Paul Rusesabagina, and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
The International Cinema Series presents critically acclaimed and important films from around the world (including independent and artistic American films) every week in the Miller Auditorium at Eckerd College. From restorations of honored classics to contemporary films that have captured the attention of critics at recent film festivals and documentaries, narrative feature films, as well as the occasional experimental work. Held each spring, the Visions of Nature, Voices of Nature Environmental Film Festival brings compelling and important films to the Tampa Bay area and the Eckerd College community in order to raise awareness and promote discussion of questions relating to nature, place, and the environment. Now approaching its tenth year, the eight-day festival brings film scholars and filmmakers from around the world to engage the audience in lively discussions of the environmental perspectives contained in documentary, animated, experimental and feature films.
The Writers in Paradise Writers Conference was co-founded in 2005 by novelist Dennis Lehane, a 1988 alumnus, and Sterling Watson, novelist and director of the Creative Writing Program at Eckerd College. This intensive eight-day experience of intimate workshop classes, panel discussions, readings, book signings, cocktail receptions and dinners is designed for those who are passionate about writing.
Since 2005, Eckerd College has co-sponsored the popular 620 Round Tables on Social Justice at The Studio@620 in downtown St. Petersburg. The round tables provide a forum for Tampa Bay community leaders to be able to discuss issues of social justice affecting our community. Discussions explore local, national and global issues that affect our lives and, all too often infringe upon human dignity.
Partnerships with performing arts venues and world class museums in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Sarasota provide Eckerd students with numerous off-campus learning opportunities. View a comprehensive list of cultural and arts attractions.
