Carol Samuels Observatory
The Carol Samuels Observatory
in St. Petersburg, Florida
The Carol Samuels Observatory is part of the Science Center of
Pinellas County, located at 7701 22nd Avenue North in St.
Petersburg near Tyrone Square Mall. The observatory is 20 - 25
minutes driving time from Eckerd College. A fine
computer-controlled 16" Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is the
heart of the facility, and is available for viewing both the day
and night skies. Eckerd College students are privileged to have
access to this facility through courses such as this one.
Three recent Eckerd astrobiology students are shown at the
observatory in the the photo to the right.
Directions: To reach the observatory from
Eckerd College, head north on I-275, exiting at 22nd Ave. North.
From the exit ramp, go left (west) on 22nd Ave North and keep going
a few miles until you reach Tyrone Square Mall at 66th Street. Go
PAST the mall for about a mile and you'll see the Science Center on
your right (north). Look for the big space shuttle painted on the
wall. The observatory is in the back through the big gate.
