Dr. Yelda Hangun-Balkir is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Eckerd College. Dr. Hangun-Balkir received her Ph.D. in chemistry in 2002 from Carnegie-Mellon University and taught biochemistry and other courses at the California University of Pennsylvania. Her research is in the areas of green chemistry, catalysis, and natural products. She has served as a member of the Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation, the Institute for Green Oxidation Chemistry, and the GLOBE program for worldwide primary and secondary school-based science education.

Chemistry at Eckerd

The Chemistry Department at Eckerd College offers Bachelor's degrees in chemistry, including a chemistry degree certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). We are one of only two Florida colleges where a student can earn an ACS-certified biochemistry degree. Our students have gone on to careers in fields such as forensics, atmospheric chemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry as well as DNA structural research, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine. We've even graduated a professional baseball player and a college president!
