Lily Raines at NASA during the summer of 2008

Lily Raines, a junior-year biochemistry major at Eckerd College, was recently awarded a Goldwater scholarship for 2009.  These national awards are highly competitive, and recognize the very best among undergraduate science students in the United States.  Lily, from Auburn, Alabama, plans to continue her scientific studies after graduation in 2010, and to conduct research on either vaccine development or drug discovery.  In 2008 she was the recipient of a summer internship from the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

Chemistry at Eckerd

The Chemistry Department at Eckerd College offers Bachelor's degrees in chemistry, including a chemistry degree certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). We are one of only two Florida colleges where a student can earn an ACS-certified biochemistry degree. Our students have gone on to careers in fields such as forensics, atmospheric chemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry as well as DNA structural research, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine. We've even graduated a professional baseball player and a college president!
