Eckerd College Chemistry News

Dr. Reggie Hudson retiresAfter a 34-year career from 1978-2012, Reggie Hudson has retired from teaching physical chemistry at Eckerd. Reggie is certainly one of the most distinguished faculty members in Eckerd’s history with an international reputation in the field of the chemistry of interstellar and cometary molecules. Over his career he published dozens of papers and received research grants in excess of $1,000,000. He also received the Lloyd Chapin Faculty Award in recognition of his research. Reggie has now taken a position as a research director at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

In addition to his research, Reggie was an ideal faculty colleague. He was a director of the Eckerd Gower Street London Centre, served on numerous and important faculty committees, and taught several generations of non-science students the scientific method using astronomy and Sherlock Holmes stories as vehicles. He was repeatedly invited to give his Greek Science lecture to the Western Heritage class. We are all going to miss him.

Chemistry at Eckerd

The Chemistry Department at Eckerd College offers Bachelor's degrees in chemistry, including a chemistry degree certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). We are one of only two Florida colleges where a student can earn an ACS-certified biochemistry degree. Our students have gone on to careers in fields such as forensics, atmospheric chemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry as well as DNA structural research, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine. We've even graduated a professional baseball player and a college president!
