Every student, in every academic major, is encouraged to complete an internship for academic credit by utilizing the resources available through the The Center for Career Planning and Applied Learning. In fact, all Environmental Studies seniors must complete a 70 hour Senior Internship (program information) either on-campus or off-campus. The purpose of this internship is to:

  • Help students decide what type of careers/graduate programs they might be interested in.
  • Make students more competitive for jobs/graduate work.

Students are provided assistance with securing an approved internship. If you would like to search for current internships in Environmental Studies, there are a number of resources available. Please visit our Career Exploration page or the Career Services Internship page, which includes a variety of job, internship, and volunteer listings. Below is a sample list of internships completed by students during the past few years:

  • Boyd Hill Nature Park - environmental education (guide), community outreach (xeriscape program), exotic plant removal
  • Eckerd College - solar power feasibility study, landscape design, webpage design
  • Environmental Consulting Firms (various) - marine policy analyst, wetland delineation
  • Florida Defenders of Wildlife - environmental education/writing (Black bear program)
  • Florida Marine Resource Institute - geographic information system analyst, seagrass restoration program, sea turtle program
  • Lakewood High School - environmental science teaching assistant
  • Lowry Park Zoo - environmental education (zoo school), graphic artist (designed wildlife pamphlet)
  • National Marine Fisheries - fisheries management analyst, ecotourism database, restoration program
  • Sierra Club - policy researcher (road issues)
  • St. Petersburg Planning Department - environmental planning
  • Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary - bird rescue and release, veterinary care (assist with surgery)
  • Tampa BayWatch - manatee/boater study, environmental education
  • University of South Florida - red tide study
