Research Opportunities

Many Environmental Studies majors gain research experience outside the classroom. Some options include:


Students can get academic credit for doing an internships through the Center for Applied Liberal Arts at Eckerd.

Independent Studies

Students can get academic credit for doing a research project by getting an Eckerd Environmental Studies professor to sponsor them.

Summer Research

Some faculty have grants to pay students to work with them on their research during the summer. In addition, students may apply during their sophomore year to be a Ford Scholar. This scholarship program provides a stipend, free housing during the summer after their junior year, and money for supplies or travel.

Travel abroad

Environmental Studies students have the opportunity to travel with faculty on both Winter Term and Semester Abroad programs.

Sample Senior Theses

Environmental studies students design and complete senior theses in which they engage in original research projects. Some sample titles include:

• "Adherence to the Marine Mammal Protection Act by dolphin-watching companies in Pinellas, Florida"
• "Movements of marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris) on Eckerd College Campus"
• "Nesting habitat selection of the coastal Least Tern"

Life After Eckerd

Environmental Studies graduates use their Environmental Studies degree to launch careers in such diverse fields as environmental education, natural resource management, parks and recreation, environmental and urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental law and policy making, scientific journalism, public health, nature photography, nature filmmaking, and environmental art. Approximately 1/3 of all Environmental Studies graduates go on to graduate or professional school within 5 years of graduation.
