London & Special Opportunities

Eckerd College leases a building on Gower Street in London, one block away from the British Museum. This long term lease has allowed many students, from all majors, to spend a semester or a January term in London. Literature students find a semester in England especially interesting, since they can visit various literary sites and get a close look at British culture. In London alone, there are sites for William Blake, Shakespeare, Keats, Dickens, George Orwell, and Virginia Woolf to visit, not to mention the fabulous resources of the London stage. At Westminster Abbey (in photo), you can visit Poet's Corner. Students can also travel to other countries for comparative work or for a wider cultural experience. Train rides can take you to the Lake district, where you can visit Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, Edinburgh, where Scott lived and wrote, or the Dorchester that Thomas Hardy wrote about.
