Albert Howard Carter

Albert Howard Carter, III, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Literature at Eckerd and adjunct professor of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a part-time massage therapist at the N.C. Cancer Hospital. He is author of Italo Calvino: Metamorphoses of Fantasy; First Cut: A Season in the Human Anatomy Lab; Clowns and Jokers Can Heal Us: Comedy and Medicine, and Our Human Hearts: A Medical and Cultural Journey. He is co-author of Rising from the Flames: The Experience of the Severely Burned. His poems have appeared in NEJM, JAMA, Hiram Review, Mediphors, The Florida Review, The Pharos, Humane Medicine, Journal of Medical Humanities, The Healing Muse, Oberon, etc., and his short fiction in The Healing Muse, Journal of Florida Medical Association, The Thomas Wolfe Review, The Intima, and Ars Medica. Carter taught literature at Eckerd College from 1971 to 2003, with visiting professorships at St. Johns University, Georgetown, Emory, the University of Montana, and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a founding freshman of Florida Presbyterian College in 1960 and stays active in the alumni affairs of Eckerd College. His website is ahcarteriii.com.
