Marine Science Senior Thesis

Juniors or seniors who demonstrated superior competence in their academic performance can design and implement, with faculty supervision, a senior thesis that involves research on a topic of their interest. The thesis project culminates in a written and bounded thesis, a public seminar, and defense, which are evaluated by three committee members, two of which must be on the EckerdCollege faculty. Some students publish the results of their senior thesis in scientific journals and/or present their results at professional conferences even before graduating.

Students interested in pursing a senior thesis are strongly advised to contact a member of the marine science faculty during their junior year to discuss the possibility of conducting research with that faculty member.

Student Research

Given the close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and subtropical climate, the Tampa Bay region has a high concentration of marine research and academic institutions. Because of many local connections in the Tampa Bay area, a large number of opportunities are available to our students through government and private marine agencies and laboratories, public aquaria, marine conservation institutions, environmental consulting firms, and commercial aquaculture firms.
