Academics

Welcome to the heart of Eckerd College -  its outstanding academic program, designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills, and values for a fulfilling life. The key to the quality of Eckerd's academic program is the faculty. While all are highly trained scholars in their fields, they are also dedicated primarily to teaching and mentoring students. Our alumni rank "relationships with faculty" as what they valued most about their Eckerd experience.

Eckerd College is known for its commitment to general education, a set of courses common to all students; its commitment to provide every student with the opportunity to acquire both a global and an environmental perspective; and a wide range of study abroad programs that sends students to every corner of the globe. Students here can study in-depth in about 40 different majors or design their own interdisciplinary concentrations. Many students here become deeply involved in research under the guidance of a faculty sponsor.  About 40% of each Eckerd graduating class goes on to pursue advanced degrees, and Eckerd is among the nation's leaders in the percentage of its graduates who earn doctoral degrees.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a comprehensive study of the academic quality of the country's colleges and universities, has found that Eckerd ranks among the very best at providing "enriching educational experiences." For those of us engaged in Eckerd's academic program, as both students and faculty, this is no surprise. If you decide to become a member of the Eckerd community, we believe you will find it to be true as well.

Sincerely yours,

Lloyd W. Chapin
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

I like the phrase 'barefoot and brainy' for summing up what this place is like. Yes, people here are smart and work hard. Yes, it is an academically intense experience. But we can show up to our thesis meeting in flip-flops. And we will have fun along the way.
