Why did you decide to study Spanish in college?
My exposure to Hispanic culture in New York is where my love of Spanish language was realized. I decided to study Spanish in high school and came to the conclusion that this is what I wanted to study in college. Now I'm pursuing a dual major in Spanish and International Studies at Eckerd.
What is your favorite Spanish word, term or expression? Why?
Me encanta, which means "I love." This is perfect for me because I'm not afraid to express what I love. It also allows me to express how engaged I feel about a specific subject.
What is your favorite Spanish speaking country and why?
It is so hard to choose, I'm not not sure I have a favorite Spanish speaking country. There are so many wonderful countries with such a variety of food, culture, and history. I guess I love them all!
What is your funniest or most embarrassing foreign language conversation/translation story?
I was walking out of the cafeteria and I said "¡No entre!" to a friend I was with from Venezuela and I was blocking him from walking out of the cafe. What I was saying was, "Do not enter." Well, the correct phrase I was looking for is "No sales." I'm not sure the retelling of this story is funny, so maybe it is all lost in translation, I guess it was a "you had to be there moment."
Have you been able to utilize your Spanish language skill? How and where?
I'm really excited to travel abroad next year and take advantage of my language skills. I am going to study in Puebla, Mexico, for the 2014 spring semester.
What do you like most about studying Spanish at Eckerd?
I love meeting other people who are excited about and enjoy Spanish as much as I do. Developing my language skill has been wonderful, but also having the chance to make connections with other students makes studying Spanish more fun.
