I began studying Spanish my junior year of high school. I always enjoyed the classes, and I knew that I would want to continue with Spanish in college. I chose Eckerd because I felt it would provide me with some unique experiences to study the language.
Over my four years in the Spanish program, I not only learned the language, but the variety of classes I took gave me knowledge on Spanish films, Spanish literature, Spanish history, and different cultures. As I look back on the different classes I took, I see that the program taught me more than the language alone.
I also had the opportunity to travel to Salamanca, Spain during winter term for a month-long language immersion trip. Not only was the trip incredible, but living in a Spanish-speaking country, even just for a month, really helped my fluency.
Since I was young I knew I wanted to speak and understand Spanish. I think it's important to know a second language, as it opens doors to communicate with millions of people worldwide. Knowing Spanish is especially useful in the United States, as we have such a large Spanish-Speaking population.
After graduating from Eckerd, I worked with an in-home tutoring agency, tutoring four elementary school students English. For two of my students, English was their second language, so knowing Spanish helped me communicate with both the students and their families. I worked with these students for one school year before I entered the graduate program in Journalism and Media Studies at USF St. Petersburg last fall to pursue a master's degree. I have also continued to coach figure skating in Ellenton, and I am currently a Spanish tutor for two of our rink's high-level figure skaters.
*update - Robbie earned his Master's Degree in Journalism and Media Studies in the spring of 2011.
