Spanish was a great choice for a second major while at Eckerd. These  days, versatility, especially through a second language, on a resume is so important. I can say that it was academically challenging and rewarding to gain this proficiency. I have conquered entire novels in Hispanic Women Writers, learned about indigenous cultures from an inside perspective with Professor Angulo-Cano in Advanced  Conversation, and been exposed to Spanish/ Latin American art and cinema from Dalí and Buñuel, to the contemporary Bemburg and Cuarón.

Some of my most memorable Spanish experiences took place outside of the classroom. While on a service trip to the Dominican Republic my freshman year, our group took an active part in growing organic fair trade coffee. In the process, we were exposed to the vibes of Caribbean culture and even picked up a new accent. I was also fortunate to spend a Winter Term in the ancient university town of Salamanca, Spain. Mixing with students from all over the world, I  wholeheartedly indulged in tapas, and got a semesters worth of credit  doing it.

Now that I've graduated, I know that Spanish will open doors to getting a job in other countries. Someday I may even pursue an  advanced degree. My Spanish skills have already proven to be an extracurricular asset locally for me during these four years of college. I have been able to interpret for non-English speakers while  serving on the Eckerd College Search and Rescue team. The Spanish department on campus is definitely one to become involved with. The  professors are fun, they implement creative curricula, and are totally committed to providing the global experience.
