"Eckerd is the time of your life."

April Minio
Majors: Psychology and Human Development
Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a double major studying Psychology and Human Development with a track in Child Development. I'm currently studying abroad in London at the Eckerd College Study Centre which was one of the best decisions and experiences I've had at Eckerd so far!! Along with being a member of the EC Cheerleading team, I am a Student Ambassador, a member of the Student Ambassador board and involved with Pet Life. I work at the Center For Innovative Learning during the week and give tours to prospective students on weekdays and weekends. I love spending time at South Beach with my friends, taking a kayak out on a sunny afternoon and studying on the Chapel Patio.

Why did you decide to attend EC?

A major deciding factor for me was the academics. As a Human Development major, finding a college/university that offered such a good program was slim pickings. The faculty was very welcoming and made me feel right at home within the classroom. Outside of the classroom the whole environment of Eckerd drew me in. Everyone was so friendly and relaxed, like they could be themselves. Walking around campus I felt like I was at home.

How has Eckerd changed your life?

Eckerd has changed my life in so many ways. For starters I have had so many opportunities placed at my fingertips. Studying abroad was always a dream of mine and Eckerd made it possible. The interactions I've had with many of my professors has not only helped me within the classroom, but outside as well. I have grown to know my professors well enough that I can go into their offices and talk about anything from internship opportunities to just life in general.

What are some traits or characteristics found in most Eckerd students?

Eckerd students are definitely a unique bunch. We're all different from one another in terms of where we come from, what we're studying and what we want to do with our futures. Everyone has such a carefree yet motivated attitude. We like to have fun and take advantage of our wonderful campus, but we know what it takes to succeed and we make sure that we never do any less than our best.

When did you know you made the right choice coming to Eckerd?

After attending Explore Eckerd College I knew that I had made the right decision to deposit. It wasn't until after Autumn Term though that I really knew I was at the right college for the right reasons. After making a good group of friends during Autumn Term and getting settled into my classes I couldn't help but feel right at home.

How would you describe the academic environment at Eckerd?

Everyone at Eckerd is very motivated. We may tend to occasionally have classes outside and our overall college vibe is laid back, but our academics are taken very seriously. I have yet to take a course that hasn't challenged me in some sort of way intellectually. Eckerd challenges me, yet also allows me to enjoy myself without getting too stressed out. It's an ideal balance of happy and healthy.

How do you describe the social scene at Eckerd?

There is always something going on, whether it's a group of people having a bonfire at South Beach or Palmetto putting on a weekend event. You can always find something to do on campus just by wandering around. Because we're in such an awesome location, most of our social events are hosted outside on South Beach and Kappa Field. The Waterfront and pool are also great places to go and hang out at.

What are some of your favorite things at Eckerd?

I have so many favorite things, but a main one would be the professor and student interactions. At Eckerd you aren't just a number in a huge lecture hall, you are a person with a name and a purpose. Professors will go out of their way to help you if you seek their assistance. Going out on the water in a kayak or paddle board is so peaceful and you're almost guaranteed to see a group of dolphins swimming around. I love taking the walk to South Beach and laying on a hammock overlooking the water, it's perfect at night just as the sun is setting.

What is your ideal Sunday at Eckerd?

Sunday's have always been known as the resting day. While most of my Sundays are dedicated to homework and studying, I love to have that one Sunday where all I do is relax and have "me" time. My ideal Sunday would be waking up in time for brunch with my friends. After we ate endless amounts of hash browns and pancakes at the Cafe we would head off to St. Pete beach for a few hours. Relaxing on the beach while reading a good book is my ideal afternoon. After taking in just enough sun and salt water we would head back to campus where we'd eat dinner at the Pub and watch the sunset from South Beach.
