"I became the leader I am here - not just in classes but through activities outside of class."

"Growing up, I always knew that climate change was a problem," muses Craig Altemose. But it wasn't until he came to Eckerd that he decided to do something about it.

"I read a book by Lester Brown my senior year in the Quest for Meaning. It really opened my eyes and helped me see the connections between all the things I cared about and the natural world. I started to realize this was something I needed to work on."

So after finishing a joint J.D./Master's in Public Policy at Harvard, Craig founded the Better Future Project. The project aims to build grassroots support for ending our dependence on fossil fuels.

"There's a consensus that we need to move away from fossil fuels," says Craig. "The hang-up is how quickly." Craig travels throughout Massachusetts, Iowa, Florida and California developing leaders, fostering new connections and running campaigns that directly challenge the fossil fuel industry.

It's not what he expected to be doing. "As an international relations major at Eckerd, I thought I'd be working on global development, poverty - that sort of thing. Eckerd helped me understand how interdependent everything is ... and how our ability to grow enough food to feed everybody supersedes everything else."

Craig says his Eckerd advantage was taking on leadership roles that include freshman senator, director of financial affairs, VP and President of Eckerd's student government. Craig also co-founded three student organizations related to sustainability and social justice.

Craig Altemose '06 holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Master's in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
