"The commitment to pay it forward is something I definitely took away from Eckerd."
"I'm a cross between Michael Clayton and Bob the Builder," laughs David Canter. As Director of Global Business Services for Deutsche Bank®, David heads up a global team that manages the day-to-day operational risk for three of the Bank's businesses.
It seems a far cry from the young man he was in 1993 when he first came to Eckerd. "Independent study made it an interesting place," he recalls. "You could create a course of study and if you could get a professor to sponsor it, you could take it."
It was through independent study that he learned the skills he would one day use on Wall Street. In his senior year, David was a teaching assistant in a course required of all international students, "Introduction to American Culture Studies."
"It gave me a place to really experiment with different styles of influencing others and getting others to think," says David, who taught under his American Studies professor. "These are the same skills I use now with my staff and my team. I never could have known while I was doing it how important it would be later on."
But his time at Eckerd taught David more than how to lead. "I learned a lot about not only what it is to be successful, but what it is to be a good human being," he says, pointing to Eckerd's community service requirement.
Today David serves on the board of directors for Sage, a national advocacy group for older members of the LGBT community. "The commitment to pay it forward is something I definitely took away from Eckerd."
David says his Eckerd advantage was designing an Independent Study course that allowed him to explore his passions and become a leader.
