Alumni in Action
IT Management Consultant
Class of 1980
Where are you now and what are you doing?
I am living in Colorado where I have been since graduation. I have my own IT Management consulting practice and am busy with several contracts.
If you are employed, what does your job entail and how has your Eckerd experience impacted your career?
I have reinvented myself, in a professional sense, many times since graduation. Eckerd taught me how to think critically while being open minded and that philosophy has opened many doors to opportunity. It is funny that those opportunities are very rarely where you expect to find them, but recognizing your seminal moments and acting on them appropriately have made all the difference.
Describe some of your best memories or favorite traditions from your time at Eckerd:
The absolutely great and dedicated professors; the atmosphere that is so conducive to learning; the London Study Centre; the wonderful mix of students both foreign and domestic; but most of all, the feeling that I could do anything and be anybody I aspired to be.
What makes Eckerd so special or why does it stand out to you as a great college? What does it mean to you now that you have been away for awhile?
Whenever I go back for whatever reason, I am always sincerely welcomed. Whenever I interact with current or former faculty, staff, students, or alumni, there is always an understanding and warmth that comes from being part of the experience.
What opportunities have you had because of your Eckerd education and how have they impacted your life?
I was able to study abroad during my junior year at Eckerd. Because of that, and a long string of related events, I married a German woman and have spent countless vacations in eastern and western Europe. Our children are bilingual in English and German, and have had formal classes in Spanish and French. We will strongly encourage them to study abroad once they get to Eckerd!
What has changed about Eckerd since you left and what remains the same?
Eckerd has gotten bigger and better but the core values are definitely still there. You can feel it on campus and everywhere the alumni are.
