"Eckerd shaped my academic passions which translated into real-world passions."
Meghan Meehan-Draper is elated. Fresh off a year of work with a communications firm in Washington, D.C., she's back in her home state of Florida to manage a congressional campaign.
"Eckerd shaped my academic passions, which translated into real-world passions," says the Communication and French major. "A lot of my friends went to huge state schools and they left not knowing their goals. Eckerd helped me focus."
Meghan uses the term in its broadest sense. While at Eckerd, she was a Ford Scholar and in the honors program, did international service in Peru, captained the dance team, took part in plays and student government. She even spent a semester studying in Provence, France. "Eckerd gave me the confidence, freedom and flexibility to get what I want."
At Eckerd, Meghan learned more than just how to communicate in two languages. "It's an unsaid requirement that you have to care about each other and invest in each other's growth," she says, "because Eckerd is small and you have to rely on each other for a good class experience. That's carried over into how I want to live my life in the real world."
Meghan's world is about to get busier. "I'm very much looking forward to being back on the campaign trail," she says. "I'm looking forward to the long hours, the events, raising money - I'm excited for it all."
Meghan says her Eckerd advantage was the semester she spent studying at a French-language college in Provence, France. Eckerd's Center for Career Planning and Applied Learning helped Meghan get this placement.
