Welcome

The month of July has been a busy one for the Eckerd College Alumni Association. During July the ECAA in conjunction with several regional chapters hosted five Freshmen Send-off Events in Chicago, Denver, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., to welcome incoming students and their families to the Eckerd College community. The incoming students had the opportunity to meet other new freshmen, current students, parents, alumni and Eckerd staff. The ECAA thanks our hosts, J.B., Judy and Jeff '98 Morrow, Mike Littman '70, Sue Cornman '71, Bethany Littman '06, Maureen and Ian '89 Johnson, Ann Rittenberg '79, James Heaton '88, Melanie Buechler '99, and Al '66 and Birgit '69 Robbert for opening their homes to Eckerd College's newest community members.

 

Upcoming Events

On Saturday, August 11, 2007, alumni are invited to come back to Eckerd to welcome the new freshmen at the Waterfront Open House. For more information about this event, visit the alumni website.

Three Eckerd Networking events will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2007, in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Sarasota, Florida. For more information on these events, please contact Director of Alumni Relations Grace Lager '97.

The Eckerd College Soccer Reunion will be held Saturday, September 22, 2007, and will include socials, alumni soccer games and Men's and Women's Eckerd Soccer matches. For more information, please contact Director of Alumni Relations Grace Lager '97.

Come back to Eckerd's campus to Reconnect, Renew and Remember your days at Eckerd during Alumni Weekend 2007. Events are open to all alumni and include the Fifth Annual Matthew T. McDermott Golf Tournament, the Third Annual Triton Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament, Russian Studies Reunion, Eckerd College Alumni Night at Woody's and the Fifth Annual 5K Triton Run.

Stefanie (Janoski) Frump '01

Stefanie FrumpStefanie, a New Jersey native, graduated from Eckerd in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science. She went on to pursue a career in Marine Science both as a teacher and scientist. Stefanie, now a resident of St. Petersburg, Florida, has worked as the Marine Science Coordinator at the Marine Center at Campbell Park Elementary for the last four years. Prior to working for Campbell Park Elementary she was an Instructor at the Florida Aquarium. She is married to fellow Eckerd alumnus and teacher Steven Frump '00. In her spare time Stefanie likes to kayak and scuba dive with her husband. In March 2007, Stefanie was featured on the Fox 13 news station's “What's Right with Tampa Bay” segment which is dedicated to uplifting and inspiring stories found around the Tampa Bay area.

The first Chicago area Freshmen Send-off Picnic was held on July 1, 2007, at the home of J.B. and Judy Morrow, parents of ECAA Board member Jeff Morrow '98. In attendance were local alumni Julia Goodwin '72 and Matthew Staman '92, and several members of the ECAA Board including Sue Cornman '71 and Scott Nolan '96.

On Saturday, July 14, 2007, the second annual New York area Freshmen Send-off Brunch was held at the Carousel in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Attendees included hosts Ann Rittenberg '79, James Heaton '88 and Melanie Buechler '99, along with other local alumni Garrett Bowden '73, Pamela Cruz '84, Cecily Iddings '00, Gerald Kempa '86 and Dara Kern '02.

The third annual New England area Freshmen Send-off BBQ was held at the home of Trustee Ian Johnson '89 and his wife, Maureen, on Sunday, July 15, 2007. Several alumni were spotted welcoming the incoming freshmen including Beth Elliott '02, Brendan McCluskey '01 and Suzanne Slater '99.

The fifth annual Colorado Rockies area Freshmen Send-off Picnic was hosted on Sunday, July 22, 2007 by Sue Cornman '71 and Mike Littman '70. Alumni Beth Littman '06, Len Meyer '80, Becky Harney '71, and Abby '01 and Andre '01 Janusz  were all at the picnic to welcome the new Eckerd students.

The fifth annual Colorado Rockies area Freshmen Send-off Picnic was hosted on Sunday, July 22, 2007 by Sue Cornman '71 and Mike Littman '70. Alumni Beth Littman '06, Len Meyer '80, Becky Harney '71, and Abby '01 and Andre '01 Janusz  were all at the picnic to welcome the new Eckerd students.

ALUMNI ANNOUNCEMENTS/UPDATES

Jim Simmons '81 is entering his fourth season as the Trainer for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Club. Jim worked for two years as the minor league Rehab Coordinator for the San Francisco Giants and this past year worked as the Trainer for the Fresno Grizzlies, the AAA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Working alongside Jim are two other Eckerd graduates: General Manager/Senior Vice President Brian Sabean '78 and Major League Hitting Coach Joe Lefebvre '79. Alumnus and owner of Hair By Lee and Friends Salon in Orange Park, Florida, Lee Goodnight '69 is an active volunteer for the Locks of Love charity, which provides natural hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children. Lee also coordinates the annual Locks of Love Cut-a-Thon in Jacksonville, Florida, and is a volunteer canoe instructor for the Girl Scouts and the American Canoeing Association.

In March 2007, Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College Jane Arbuckle Petro '68 was named the fourth Editor in Chief for the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and recently published her first issue. In September 2007, Jane will be moving to Dubai to help start a Cosmetic Surgery Hospital as a part of the Sheik's Dubai Health Care City Program. The Cosmetic Surgery Hospital will be the first of 35 hospitals to be built in the complex and will consist of residency training, medical education and patient care.
