ASPEC Director Position

JOB SUMMARY

The ASPEC Director is the chief interface between the Academy, the College and the community, is responsible for the day to day operations of the Academy, and manages the Academy's administrative and clerical support staff. As such, the ASPEC Director:

A. As ASPEC's primary interface to Eckerd College, the Director assures that College policies and procedures are followed, addresses problems and issues that may arise between ASPEC and the College, takes the lead in planning and monitoring the relationship with the College to maintain a mutually positive relationship and understands and communicates the College's expectations to the Senate and the Assembly.

  1. Works with the Senate in fulfilling the College's expectations of ASPEC.
  2. Takes the lead in creatively developing opportunities and processes with the ASPEC Senate which enable College students and faculty to draw on the expertise & experience of ASPEC members.
  3. Takes the lead with the ASPEC Senate in generating and coordinating involvement with PEL, OLLI, LDI, Elderhostel, Alumni and the Residential College by helping to develop programs which stimulate synergy between ASPEC and other College lifelong learning programs.
  4. Takes the lead with the ASPEC Senate in assisting the College with projects and programs and on request, assists the College Director of Admissions with recruiting students.
  5. Works to align ASPEC's Annual Goals with Eckerd's College's Annual Goals.
  6. Coordinates with the Dean of Special Programs the setting of regular meetings and agenda between the Dean and ASPEC and participates in the Program Director meetings.
  7. Takes the lead with the Senate in contributing to the plans and programs which strengthen the College/ASPEC bond.

B. Manages the daily affairs of the Academy including arranging, scheduling, operating and resolving conflict related to the facilities and the space used by ASPEC including Lewis House, manages the office staff, manages ASPEC's contractual employee service agreements and interactions with the College's facilities support staff, and manages the efficient operation and maintenance of the Lewis House physical plant.

C. Manages the operation of ASPEC including initially addressing ASPEC's day to day problems and issues before collaborating on these with the ASPEC Senate including tension & conflict between ASPEC members, assures member satisfaction with ASPEC's operation, manages the staff's collection and administration of member data, the notification and collection of member dues, the management of ASPEC's accounts payables and receivables guided by the College's & ASPEC's finance policies, manages member leaves of absence, resignations, & special dues levels and the implementation of member retention strategies & programs assisted by the Membership Committee.

  1. Works with the ASPEC Senate monitoring the general health of ASPEC and in proposing programs needed to maintain a strong ASPEC membership & organization.
  2. Works with the Senate in getting ASPEC to embrace change and more readily accept change.
  3. Works with the ASPEC President and monitors & proposes changes to increase the visibility & value of ASPEC to the Eckerd College community and the greater community at large.

D. Works with the ASPEC Treasurer and President in the preparation of and in managing to ASPEC's yearly balanced budget and on Senate approval of the budget, takes the lead in submitting the budget for approval to the College.

E. Decides staff positions and salaries guided by ASPEC's and the College's policies and procedures and within the confines of an ASPEC balanced budget, evaluates ASPEC's staff annually and develops and executes programs needed for their development. Senate approval is needed for hiring additional staff and for changing the level of job descriptions.

F. Informs the College regarding ASPEC's marketing initiatives and programs.

G. Manages the relationship between ASPEC members and College faculty and students with the ASPEC Senate's assistance.

H. Assists the Senate and ASPEC Committees in establishing new community outreach programs, in helping ASPEC solve Public Policy and Community issues, and in overseeing and maintaining current community involvement data.

I. Seeks to obtain the College's approval of ASPEC's proposed changes to its Bylaws.

J. Monitors and assures consistency of ASPEC Bylaws, Policies & Procedures with Eckerd College Practices.

K. Instrumental in the recruitment, selection and integration of new members into ASPEC including informing candidates of ASPEC's & Eckerd College's expectations before their applications are considered, assuring that candidates state how they will contribute to ASPEC and/or Eckerd College and/or the Community (time/ talent & money), informing candidates of their election as members, taking the lead with following up on candidate commitments & assisting with their committed involvement, responsible for ASPEC new member orientation, and responsible for collecting and analyzing member demographics to anticipate the number of new members needed to sustain membership levels.

L. Works with ASPEC's Committees in the fulfillment of their responsibilities.

The ASPEC Director helps plan the future needs of the ASPEC community and as such:

A. Assures that the ASPEC Strategic Plan is integrated within the College's overall Strategic Plan.

B. Takes the lead with the ASPEC Senate's assistance in planning ASPEC's synergy with other lifelong learning programs and in planning the future space needs of ASPEC.

C. Assists the ASPEC President, Senate and Committees with future planning.

D. Gives input to the Senate for the selection and approval of ASPEC Fellows & Emeriti members.

E. Gives input to the Senate related to upholding the standards for membership selection.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Requires demonstrated leadership and management skills.
  2. Knowledge of lifelong learning and continuing education is desirable.
  3. The skill to partner and contribute within the Eckerd College community as a team.

Ability to:

  1. Represent the ASPEC membership to Eckerd College and the greater community.
  2. Work positively within the Eckerd College community.
  3. Advocate and embrace change when needed.
  4. Be an advocate for ASPEC, Special Programs and Eckerd College.
  5. Collaboratively work and contribute to Eckerd College efforts.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  1. Previous leadership experience & ability is required.
  2. Previous College administrative experience is desirable.
  3. An advanced educational degree or equivalent is desired.
