ASPEC's Interest Groups: Leading and Learning
At the heart of the educational enterpise of the Academy is a diverse series of programs and Interest Groups. Members initiate proposals for groups, which are approved by the Senate, and all groups are led by members. Participants have opportunities to explore new ideas and interests while sharing areas of expertise. Some groups are intellectual, some consist of physical activities, and others are performance oriented.
Groups meet in a variety of meeting rooms, studios, and via internet. The schedule of meetings is usually weekly, although some may meet twice each month or by other arrangements. The Interest Groups are primarily led by ASPEC members, with occasional invitations to Eckerd College faculty and staff, as well as to outside presenters.
ASPEC member's dues cover participation in all Interest Groups. Members choose their own level of involvement, and whether they attend regularly or volunteer to lead a group is by their own choice. Participation is left to the discretion of individuals, and active learning and exchange of views is the goal of everyone. During most of the year there are 30 to 45 Interest Groups in action at Lewis House.
.
