The Academy is a lifelong learning community for mature adults, founded 29 years ago.

Our members, whether working, in transition from one career to another, retired, living in the Tampa Bay area, or part-time visitors to Florida, seek a lifestyle that provides rejuvenation, enrichment, and and an active social life.

Academy members achieve this through activities focused in four areas:

Working and learning within the Eckerd community: We have more than 40 Interest Groups that offer opportunities for mental and physical stimulation, plus exploration and relaxation, with topics in the arts, politics, science and philosophy, and computers. Also included are activities ranging from boat building to Tai Chi. Most of our Interest Groups meet at Lewis House, the Academy's center, on the Eckerd College waterfront campus.

Working with Eckerd College: Intergenerational learning is a key part of our organization. Our members work with faculty and students in a variety of ways, collaborating on diverse projects, assisting Professors, both in and out of the classroom. Students find Lewis House a comfortable place to meet with members where they can regularly be seen working together on academic endeavors.

Working with the community in which we live: Many of our members want to make a difference, and devote time and resources to numerous community service organizations, enriching the lives of others as well as their own.

Having fun: We never forget to have fun. Our social events provide the collegiality and camaraderie necessary for a successful organization such as ours. The activities include weekly social hours, group visits to events, a monthly ''Night Out'' at a local restaurant, and holiday celebrations
