Institutions and Organizations
Below
you will find links to some of the innovative "free" schools
of the present as well as the Modern School of Stelton, New Jersey that
is no longer in existence. There are also links to community-centered
organizations that were founded on the principles of popular education
and social justice.

Gardner School in Vancouver, WA is a K-8 school that educates the
whole child, while having the students work with the community. The curriculum
follows the philosophy of John Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence.

Hull
House is a community-centered social services organization in Chicago
established by Jane Adams in 1889.

Highlander
Research and Education Center is a non-profit organization that provides
education and training for community organizations in the Appalachia and
South that are fighting oppression and/or injustice.

The University of Chicago Laboratory
Schools was established in 1896 at the University of Chicago. The
school was conceived by John Dewey as an expermiment in his philosophy
that children learn better when what they learn is related to their own
lives and that education should be student-centered rather than content-centered.

Summerhill
is a "free" school in Suffolk, Great Britain. Founded in 1921
by A.S. Neill, Summerhill is an experimental school where lessons are
optional and the rules and regulations are changed weekly.
The
Waldorf method of education was founded by Rudolf Steiner and these schools

Rutgers
University has an extension collection on the history of the Modern School
