Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker as Last-Second Shot Falls Short

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Barry’s Karega Tucker scored 18 points, including the game-winning bucket with 6.5 seconds remaining, as the Buccaneers (6-6, 1-1 SSC) stole a victory from the Eckerd Tritons (7-5, 0-2 SSC) on Saturday evening at the McArthur Center.

In a game that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes, Eckerd trailed by as many as eight points with 4:37 left. Down 55-47, a made layup by Lewis Lampley sparked the Tritons on a 10-2 run, capped by a three by Mychal Nichols, who scored eight points during the run, to tie the game at 57 with a minute to go.

On the next possession, Barry ripped down two offensive rebounds before Tucker made a layup off the glass, giving the Bucs a 59-57 lead with 6.5 seconds left.

After a timeout, the Tritons looked to Nichols for the win, attempting a three from the corner at the buzzer but the shot was just a bit long and Barry held on for the win.

Tucker’s 18 points led all scorers while Barry’s Zach Trapp scored 10 points. Lampley led the Tritons with 11 points and seven rebounds while Nichols scored 10 points.

The teams were dead even with 36 rebounds a piece. Eckerd shot 39.6 percent from the field with Barry shooting 38 percent.

Eckerd will return to action on Wednesday, January 7 as it hosts the Tampa Spartans at 7:30pm at the McArthur Center.
