Thursday, October 9th, 2008

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Ashley Spencer scored twice and assisted on a goal to lead the Eckerd Tritons (4-8) past the Clearwater Christian Cougars (2-11-1) by a score of 4-0 on Thursday evening at North Soccer Field.

The Tritons got on the board early and often as Briana Mayhew found the back of the net after a nifty through ball by Spencer in the second minute.

Eight minutes later, Megan Gunzelman took a ball from Sarah Bird and deposited it in the net past Cougars’ goalkeeper Chelsea Thomas. In the 21st minute, Spencer scored the first of her two goals as Bird, again, led Spencer on a goal-scoring run to make it a 3-0 advantage for Eckerd.

Spencer would go on to score the only goal of the second half after a well-placed free kick by Nicole Bonnani.

For the game, Eckerd out-shot Clearwater Christian 30-2. Thomas recorded 13 saves for the Cougars while Cory Hawkins and Marisa Berger only needed to combine for one save in the game.

Eckerd will return to action on Saturday, October 11 as it travels to St. Augustine, Fla. to face the Flagler Saints at 5pm.
