Role Reversal: Men's Basketball Holds Off Vaqueros at the Buzzer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - One game after giving up a game-winning jumpshot with 0.4 seconds remaining and missing a buzzer beater, the Eckerd Tritons (4-1) found themselves in the opposite role, watching the UPR-Bayamon Vaqueros (1-3) miss a buzzer beat to hold on for a 62-59 victory on Friday night at the McArthur Center.

After Eckerd led the game by as many as 18 points with 5:03 remaining in the first half and 14 points with 13:07 left in regulation, the Vaqueros used a 21-10 run to take a 52-51 lead with 3:24 remaining.

After a layup by Angel Feliciano put Bayamon ahead 54-53, the Tritons would score six unanswered points to pull ahead 59-54.

A three-pointer by Melvin Rivera trimmed Eckerd’s lead to 59-57 but three made free throws by Trevor Lee and Chris Gray combined helped seal the deal for the Tritons before Bayamon’s failed buzzer beater.

Zaronn Cann led the Tritons with 17 points and eight rebounds while Chris Gray added nine points and a game-high four assists. Kornilous Donnell came off the bench to add seven points.

Bayamon’s Angel Feliciano led all scorers with 21 points and six boards while Javier Ayuso added 12 points.

For the game, Eckerd shot 51.2 percent from the field, including a blistering 60 percent in the second half while Bayamon shot 42 percent from the field and 12-for-13 from the charity stripe.

Eckerd will return to action on as it host the Franklin Pierce Ravens at 7:30pm on day two of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic.

Despite holding a 35-33 halftime lead and holding the opposition to a pedestrian 35.8 shooting percentage from the field, the Eckerd Tritons (3-1) could not hold off the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes (3-1), falling by a score of 75-74 on Friday afternoon at the McArthur Center.

Women's Basketball Nets First-Ever Win Over Valdosta State

Coming into Tuesday’s action, the Eckerd Tritons (2-0) were 0-6 all-time against the Valdosta State Lady Blazers (4-0), perennial NCAA South Region Tournament Participants. Led by a stifling defense and outstanding effort on the glass, the Tritons captured its first-ever victory over VSU on Tuesday, routing the Lady Blazers to the tune of a 63-44 score.

Men’s Basketball Falls in a Heartbreaker to Up-and-Coming Sailfish

Palm Beach Atlantic junior guard Jonathan Lawrence amassed a game-high 22 points, including the game-winning jumper, a 20-footer, with 0.4 seconds remaining to lead the Sailfish (2-3) to a stunning victory over the Eckerd Tritons (3-1) by the slimmest of margins, 73-72, on Monday evening at the McArthur Center.

Nagle and Lutz Lead Tritons to 20-Point Victory Over UPR-Bayamon

Eckerd senior center Olivia Nagle barely missed a double-double, scoring 21 points while grabbing nine boards as the Tritons (2-0) defeated the Puerto Rico-Bayamon Vaqueras by a score of 80-60 on Saturday evening at the McArthur Center. Ashley Lutz also poured in 19 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, for the Tritons.

Men's Basketball Routs Gallitos, 88-57

Eckerd sophomore center Dale Carn led all scorers with 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds as the Tritons (3-0) defeated the Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Gallitos (0-3) by the score of 88-57 on Friday evening at the McArthur Center.

Volleyball Season Comes to a Close at NCAA Regionals

On a day in which a #6 seed beat a #3 seed and a #7 seed beat a #2 seed, the fifth-seeded Eckerd Tritons (20-14) were looking to continue the trend of the day but fourth-seeded West Florida (30-7) had other ideas as the Argonauts defeated the Tritons in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) in NCAA South Regional Quarterfinal Action on Thursday evening.
