Volleyball Season Comes to a Close at NCAA Regionals

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

TAMPA, Fla. - On a day in which a #6 seed beat a #3 seed and a #7 seed beat a #2 seed, the fifth-seeded Eckerd Tritons (20-14) were looking to continue the trend of the day but fourth-seeded West Florida (30-7) had other ideas as the Argonauts defeated the Tritons in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) in NCAA South Regional Quarterfinal Action on Thursday evening.

Floor defense proved to be the story of the match as West Florida out-dug the Tritons 44-27, leading Eckerd to hit just .180 despite a lineup swap of outside hitters Lydee Benoit and Regi Silva.

West Florida’s offense, meanwhile, was unstoppable, hitting an impressive .404. Luciana Repach led the Argos with 10 kills while Jamie Nichols, Chelsea Wilhoite, Kara Gonzalez, and Patricia Gandolfo all had at least eight kills.

Silva led Eckerd with 11 kills and four service aces while Benoit, Keisha Carter, and Ariana Chinn each tallied eight kills.

The match marked the end of the careers of Carter, Marin Gibson, and Kristy Busse, all of whom were four-year letterwinners.
