Eckerd Offense Busts Loose in Split at Tampa Volleyball Classic

Tampa, Fla. - Following a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Ferris State (4-1), a match in which Eckerd led 2-1, the Tritons’ (4-3) offense broke out in a big way, hitting for a .323 attack percentage in a three-game sweep over the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks (2-3) on Friday afternoon at the University of Tampa’s Bob Martinez Center.

Against the Mavericks, the Tritons got outstanding offensive contributions from Lydee Benoit and Regi Silva who hit .393 and .370, respectively while setter Megan Golovkin dished out 30 set assists and Keisha Carter hit .455 with six kills.

Eckerd defeated Mankato 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.

In the first match of the day, Eckerd held what seemed to be a comfortable 2-1 lead, winning consecutive games after dropping game one.

In game four, however, the Bulldogs turned the tables as they hit a whopping .381, including four out of five attack attempts by Katie Edwards.

In game five, the Bulldogs opened on a 7-2 run from which Eckerd never seemed to recover.

Arielle Goodson led the charge for Ferris State, hitting .417 with 13 kills while Benoit and Carter each had nine for Eckerd.

The Tritons will now rest until Wednesday, September 10 as they travel to Valdosta, Ga. to take on Valdosta State at 7pm.
