Enhancing the Environment
From the beginning, Eckerd College has enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with its unique coastal environment. The flora and fauna create a kind of living, breathing classroom, which Eckerd uses to provide a subject of study, promote conservation and give practical lessons for sustainable practices. In keeping with its commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, Eckerd College intends to preserve Palm Hammock, a "wild," natural and unique forest ecosystem in the southwest part of campus, as a "living laboratory" and outdoor education area.
In addition, enhancements will be made to the general physical appearance of the campus, which is critical for student recruitment and retention as well as instilling a sense of pride in all of those who make up the Eckerd community.
