Alumni in China

by Kate Nader-Dale on March 23

Bonjour!  No, wait, wrong language.  This is my 11th tour with Marion and Eckerd College, and every year it gets better and better.  I am a member of the class of ‘96, and I was a transfer, so I only did 2 as a student, the other 9 have been as an alum.  It has been an honor to be able to continue to share our music & culture with many people, both around the US and the world.

As the years have gone by, I have been blessed to be joined by other alums.  This year, I am privileged to have the company of Jon, Aaron, Sam, and Chuck.  This trip has been amazing, as China is beautiful and our audiences most gracious.  I have to admit, though, the older I get, the less likely I am to go out at night with the students!

There is a lot to see and do here, and not nearly enough time.  You could spend a lifetime and not share all that you know and learn all that they know.  I am grateful to the College and Marion for the opportunity this trip, like all the others, has presented.

My love to all,

The “Rev”
Kate Nader-Dale ‘96

Real Life vs. TV

by Brandy Eyers and Amanda Hilsenbeck on March 22

Hello from the real-life roommates, Brandy and Amanda! Today we visited the famous terra cotta warriors from the Qin dynasty. Right now we’re in some sort of tunnel and it’s dark. Brandy says she can’t see the end. I think it will be okay though, since our bus Master (driver) is amazing. I’ve always wanted to see the terra cotta warriors (we just came out of the tunnel, by the way) because I’ve read about them and seen shows on Discovery Channel. It was just as impressive in real life as it was on TV. They are actually still excavating some of the known sites, and there are a lot of rooms that will remain closed until the archaeologists can guarantee the safety of the artifacts inside. We’re pretty sure that there are additional rooms that are simply not known yet too, since the museum is built over and around the pits where the warriors were found. I thought the idea of a river of mercury was pretty awesome even though it is supposedly underground now. To think that we only saw a portion of the underground palace is quite impressive. Tonight we’re going to see a Tang dynasty-styled show that sounds like it will be really neat. We’re excited!

Kodak Moment

by Jeanette on March 22

It was a family Kodak moment! Marion, his daughter, two sisters and neice took a moment to capture their entrance onto the Ancient City Wall of Xi’an. We had a wonderful experience in Beijing as we enjoyed the Choir and Ringers performances, visits to the ancient palaces, temples, flea markets and ate authentic Chinese food. We huffed and puffed as we climbed the Great Wall and leisurely strolled through the Summer Palace.

While Beijing held many wonderful sites, seeing the Ancient City Wall in Xi’an truly captured the look and feel of China and we are looking forward to exploring it even more over the next few days. This is an experience we will always remember!
