For your distinguished career as a professor of fine arts, art history and comparative literature for 29 years at Indiana University;

For your many important scholarly contributions to the history of art, most notably Sienese Painting in the Age of the Renaissance, which received the President's Book Award from the American Association for Italian Studies, and Art of the Western World, a companion to the Public Broadcasting Series and a Book-of-the-Month Club selection;

For distinguished visiting professorships at the University of Georgia, the University of Memphis, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem;

For your appointment by President Bush in 2001 as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities;

For your commitment to focusing the Endowment on the preservation, cultivation, and dissemination of the best of humanities research, scholarship, and public programs on both the national and state level;

For a leadership style that has been characterized in the press as "ambient civility," a style which has brought a measure of peace and good will to the culture wars that have sometimes afflicted the humanities;

and for your deep belief in the humanities as a primary source of the wisdom that sustains democracy and resolves conflict,

Eckerd College confers on Bruce Cole the Degree of Doctor of Humanities Honoris Causa.
