For your outstanding leadership as President of the Poynter Institute, the nation's most distinguished institution devoted to the professional development of media editors and reporters;

For your own work as a journalist for the Macon News, Nashville Banner, and St. Petersburg Times;

For your services as consultant and presenter to organizations that include the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Association of Educators in Journalism and Media Communications, South Africa's Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, and the European Journalism Centre;

For the contributions of your books, The Editorial Eye and The Effective Editor, to the editorial profession;

For your role in recognizing and celebrating journalistic excellence as editor and contributor to the annual series, Best Newspaper Writing, and as a judge for the Pulitzer Prize;

For your commitment to strengthening the role of minorities and increasing diversity in the journalistic profession;

And for receiving the Distinguished Alumna Award from your alma maters - Tennessee State, Michigan State, and the University of Tennessee - we are also proud to claim you today as one of our own;

For your distinguished career as scientist and manager for Argonne National Laboratory, the nation's first national laboratory and one of its largest research centers;

More specifically, for your key role as Technical Lead in the construction of precision magnets and supports for the LINAC Coherent Light Source's (LCLS) undulator system;

For previously serving as Senior Scientific Advisor for construction of the linear accelerator system of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the world's highest power superconducting linear accelerator;

For previously being responsible for construction and commissioning of the Advanced Photon Source's electron-positron injector linear accelerator;

For your significant contributions to MIT's research in elementary particle physics and detector development;

For receiving the Outstanding Woman Leader in Science, Technology and Medicine Award from the DuPage County, Illinois Y.W.C.A.; the University of Chicago's Distinguished Performance Award; and the Eckerd College Alumni Achievement Award for Career Excellence;

For maintaining strong ties to Eckerd College and for your continuing support of Eckerd College students engaged in physics projects; and

For your distinguished career at the highest levels of scientific research following completion of your bachelor's degree here at Eckerd College;
