Speeches and Remarks

Welcome
Miles C. Collier, Chairman of the Eckerd College Board of Trustees

President Eastman, Professor Meinke,Professor Jeffries, Reverend Graves, Distinguished faculty, families, and guests, and Graduates of the Class of 2007.

Welcome to the 44th Commencement of Eckerd College.

Yesterday afternoon the Board of Trustees granted the awarding of over 550 bachelor's degrees to individuals who have earned their place in the Eckerd College community of scholars.

No other action that is required of the Board of Trustees brings as much pleasure and reward as the granting of degrees each May.

Congratulations, Class of 2007!

Graduates,

In addition to the diplomas you will be receiving this morning, Eckerd College will be awarding honorary degrees to three distinguished individuals.

Two have found their way back home to Eckerd College:

Atmospheric Sciences expert and professor Harvey Jeffries, who was a member of the founding class of Eckerd College, known then as Florida Presbyterian College; and poet and Professor Emeritus Peter Meinke.

You see before you 500 graduates, in whom these faculty and these trustees have full faith that they, like you, will find their destiny in rewarding careers with lives guided by faith and renowned for service.

Graduates:

We are proud of you today. You have already distinguished yourselves in your studies, in your careers, and in your service as Eckerd College students. We know you will continue to bring great pride to Eckerd College tomorrow as our alumni.

Remember: You will always have a home here; we hope you will come back often.

Congratulations, Class of 2007!
