For your fifteen books of poetry which have established you as one of the nation's leading poets;

For your book of short stories, The Piano Tuner, which won the Flannery O'Connor Award;

For serving as writer-in-residence at such distinguished institutions as Thurber House, Davidson College, the University of Hawaii, George Washington University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Old Dominion University;

For a host of awards in recognition of the excellence of your work;

For your leadership of the Eckerd College Writing Workshop for over a quarter of a century;

For your skill as a teacher and mentor that has nourished generations of Eckerd students to become successful writers in a variety of fields;

And for the beautiful and enduring products of your verbal artistry,

Eckerd College confers on Peter Meinke the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa.

Harvey E. Jeffries

For your distinguished career over 36 years as professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the University of North Carolina and as one of the world's leading atmospheric chemists;

For your important contributions to the measurement and understanding of the influence of ozone on biological tissues in urban atmospheres;

For your major contributions to the development of appropriate air quality standards and the mechanisms for achieving them;

For the construction and operation of the world's first experimental outdoor air-quality or "smog" chambers;

For your wide ranging work as a science advisor to the Untied States Environmental Protection Agency, the states of North Carolina, California and Texas as well as many agencies and corporations;

For receiving the Greenberg Alumni Endowment Award from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and the Exceptional Leadership Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency;

For a long and sustained record of funded research and publication including continuous funding by the EPA since 1971;

For your dedication to students, colleagues, clients, and scientific discovery for the public good, all traceable to your days as a member of the founding class and first chemistry club of Florida Presbyterian College, Eckerd College confers on Harvey E. Jeffries the Degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.
