Greetings from the Graduating Class
Katherine Robinson '07
Program for Experienced Learners
My fellow graduates, President Eastman, Honored Trustees, Esteemed Speaker, Professors, Eckerd College staff, family and friends,
The Eckerd PEL 2007 class welcomes you to commencement. Today, we have many achievements to celebrate.
We are experienced learners in our diverse fields, but no more experienced in academics than those who began this journey in a more traditional way. As Benjamin Franklin said, Genius without education is like silver in the mine.
A liberal arts education provides an amazing opportunity for students to dig deep for the precious metal within the mind. Excellence in teaching in the liberal arts setting is what puts the refining touches on the silver and helps to create a beautiful work of art. The artwork may be something in clay, literature, music, science, drama or even a new approach to business.
Henry David Thoreau said This world is but canvas to our imaginations. The liberal arts education at Eckerd College has fueled our intellectual growth, empowering us with creativity and imagination through enriched educational experiences to splash upon the canvas of our minds.
We have enjoyed an array of textures and spectacular colors in the form of faculty, staff, a beautiful campus, challenging academic programs and even opportunities to study abroad. We have dipped the paintbrush of our academic lives in all of this and more.
We are like artists, prepared to paint something amazing as we journey on to create brighter futures for our world.
Congratulations! Today we celebrate the inspired and created masterpieces before you.
