Congresswoman Kathy Castor will be the speaker for the 45th Commencement of Eckerd College on Sunday, May 18, 2008.
Elected in her first campaign for a congressional seat, Congresswoman Castor was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2007. She represents the 11th Congressional District of Florida, which covers parts of Hillsborough, Pinellas and Manatee counties.
Congresswoman Castor received a rare honor as a freshman representative when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked her to serve on the powerful Rules Committee, which has jurisdiction over the rules and order of business of the House. She also has been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee. Speaker Pelosi selected her for a leadership position in the steering and policy committee, which assigns fellow party members to other House committees and advises party leaders on policy.
Congresswoman Castor is leading a life dedicated to public service. She was previously a Hillsborough County Commissioner, representing District 1, which covered much of Florida's 11th Congressional District. She is the former President of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers and, in 2005, she was named as the Tampa Bay Business Journal's Woman of the Year in government.
Over the years, Congresswoman Castor has built a strong record on health care reform, the protection of wetlands, the regulation of utilities, and the regulation of lobbyists and special interest groups.
Growing up in a family devoted to public service, Congresswoman Castor is the daughter of the former President of the University of South Florida, Florida Education Commissioner, three-term Florida Senator and former Hillsborough County Commissioner Betty Castor and former Hillsborough County Judge Don Castor.
