Greetings from the Graduating Class
Thomas Carlton Stovall '10, Program for Experienced Learners Graduate
My fellow graduates, President Eastman, Honored Trustees, Esteemed Speaker, Professors, Eckerd College staff, family and friends, on behalf of PEL, the Program for Experienced Learners, I am honored to welcome you to the 2010 Eckerd College Commencement services.
Eckerd College has been a part of my adult life beginning in 1970 when I entered Florida Presbyterian College, to my standing before you today. As C.S. Lewis put it, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." Today, we celebrate the achievement of a great academic goal, and we will take this achievement to fashion our next lifetime dream.
A dream is only realized with discipline: Discipline - the backbone of every soldier, the secret of each successful artist, and the hallmark of every college graduate. For some of us it took longer to develop the discipline to complete our education. We will take our hard-won discipline with us as we journey ahead.
My journey has been an adventurous one in the world of the arts and entertainment. We have all been on different journeys, yet here we gather today, united by our common goal of achieving an education. It demanded perseverance and discipline, but also a dream. Today, we celebrate the fulfillment of a dream, that of achieving knowledge, and hopefully wisdom. Now, Eckerd College goes with us into the world.
As Henry David Thoreau encourages us:
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."
Thank you Eckerd College. Congratulations and good luck to you all!
