Miles C. Collier, Chairman of the Eckerd College Board of Trustees
President Eastman; Dean Stewart; Senator Nelson; honorary degree recipients Dr. and Mrs. Block; distinguished faculty, families, and guests, and Graduates of the Class of 2011, today is a celebration of significant numbers and achievements in the life of Eckerd College.
Yesterday afternoon the Board of Trustees granted the awarding of 532 bachelor's degrees to individuals who have earned their place in the Eckerd College community of scholars.
No other action that is required of the Board of Trustees brings as much pleasure and reward as the granting of degrees each May. Congratulations graduates!
This weekend we remember, too, the faculty and first class of students who founded Eckerd College, then Florida Presbyterian College 50 years ago. They began a dialogue on the important questions of civilization, a dialogue that you advanced during your time here at
Eckerd College, and one that will be continued by those who follow you. As alumni, know you are invited to return to rejoin that dialogue when you seek renewal in your professions and your lives.
And yesterday, the College - through the participation of its Trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends - successfully completed the largest capital campaign in the College's history, ahead of schedule, with gifts and pledges exceeding 80 million dollars.
Graduates, as we celebrate you today, we celebrate the future of Eckerd College.
Congratulations and best wishes, Class of 2011!
