The Lloyd W. Chapin Award
For Excellence in Scholarship
September 7, 2005
For over twenty years of internationally recognized laboratory research in astrochemistry, astrophysics, and astrobiology;
For a steady stream of research articles in the leading journals in your field;
For invited presentations at scholarly meetings in this country and around the world, including France, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Poland, Singapore and the United Kingdom;
For serving as manuscript reviewer for the leading journals in your field and proposal reviewer for the American Chemical Society, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Department of Education;
For receiving funding from NASA over the years in excess of $400,000 to support your study of comets, and most recently for co-authoring a successful grant proposal for $1,000,000 over the next five years from the NASA Astrobiology Institute;
For your appointment to the Goddard Space Flight Center astrobiology team, the only faculty member from a small college to be so recognized;
For your varied service at Eckerd as teacher of chemistry, developer of courses for non-science majors, pioneer of web-based resources, and leader of the educational assessment program;
And for serving as a model of how a liberal arts college faculty member stays professionally productive at a high level, thereby reminding us of your hero Sherlock HolmesŐs repeated injunction to his colleague: "You know my methods, Watson. Apply them,"
