The John M. Bevan Award
Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award

September 6, 2006

The John M. Bevan Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award is named in honor of the College's founding academic dean. The purpose of the award is to honor individual faculty members for nurturing a campus climate that fosters teaching at its best. The recipient receives a citation and a check.

I am very pleased to announce that the recipient this year is Professor Sterling Watson.

For sustained excellence as a demanding and inspiring teacher of creative writing for well over three decades;

For the publication of five critically acclaimed novels, one of which was nominated for the National Book Award and another for the Edgar Award and the Hammett Prize;

For your leadership of Eckerd's Creative Writing Program, which has produced a steady succession of published authors;

For your tenure as chair of the Creative Arts Collegium during which emerged an exciting vision for the arts at Eckerd now embedded in the capital campaign;

For your role in creating an important new major in communication grounded in the liberal arts;

For collaborating with your former student, Eckerd alumnus, and distinguished novelist Dennis Lehane to found and direct the highly successful workshop for aspiring authors, Writers in Paradise;

For the diverse talents that have enabled you to be an outstanding teacher, effective administrator, and productive artist;

And perhaps most remarkably, demonstrating it is possible to be a curmudgeon who is easy to love and admire,
