Victoria J. BakerThe Lloyd W. Chapin Award
Excellence in Scholarship

September 5, 2007

The Lloyd W. Chapin Award for Excellence in Scholarship is named in honor of the college's current academic dean. This award is also endowed by a generous gift from a couple with close ties to the college and who wish to remain anonymous. Its purpose is to honor individual faculty members whose scholarship has made a significant contribution to the field in which they work. The recipient receives a citation and a check.

I am very pleased to announce that the recipient this year is Professor of Anthropology, Victoria J. Baker.

For your amazingly consistent pace of productive scholarship over the last twenty years;

For the authorship of three books on village life in Sri Lanka, including Coping with Uncertainty, one of the distinguished series of case studies in cultural anthropology published by Harcourt Brace and which has been translated into Sinhalese;

For publishing articles annually in refereed journals, edited volumes, and encyclopedias;

For over 25 published reviews of books in your field for Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries and the Anthropology Newsletter;

For presenting papers year in and year out at the annual conferences of the American Anthropological Association, the Society of Applied Anthropology, and the Comparative and International Education Society;
For delivering numerous invited lectures ranging from your alma mater Sweet Briar College to professional gatherings in India, the Czech Republic, and Sri Lanka;

For fostering a love of anthropology in your students through supervising their field research in a host of countries from Central and South America to Australia to South and Southeast Asia;

For serving many years as the College's Graduate Fellowships Advisor and Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Advisor resulting in many of the College's successful fellowship winners;

And for embodying in your scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and service the College's commitment to fostering the cross-cultural understanding essential to a global society,

Eckerd College presents the Lloyd W. Chapin Award for Excellence in Scholarship to Victoria J. Baker, Professor of Anthropology.
