Accessing Support Services

As a student at Eckerd College in need of academic accommodations as a result of a disability, you may obtain AES support services by submitting relevant documentation related to your disability to our office.  Guidelines for documentation are found here.

When AES has received your documentation, we will contact you via your Eckerd email, directing you to make an appointment with us to complete paperwork and meet with an Accessible Education Services staff member.

After registering with AES, you will be able to request your accommodations online each semester.  AES staff will review and approve your accommodations, and your current professors will be notified via email of your accommodations.  (Instructions for requesting your accommodations online are found here.)  Only pertinent information will be released (i.e., a list of accommodations to be provided to the student). The nature of one's disability is never disclosed to faculty without a student's expressed permission.

Accessible Education Services staff members serve as advocates ensuring that students who qualify for support services receive the appropriate and reasonable accommodations. Accommodations will be determined based on the individualized needs of the student, any relevant diagnoses and the recommendations made by the professional who conducted the disability evaluation. Examples of accommodations provided to students with disabilities include: extended test time, a testing area with reduced distractions, note takers and ADA-compliant housing. Ample time is required to plan for on-campus services, so students should contact Accessible Education Services as soon as possible.

If you have questions about these procedures or require more information, please call 727-864-8248 or email aes@eckerd.edu.

New Student Guide to AES

Eckerd College is devoted to providing support services that enable students with disabilities to participate in, and benefit from, all College programs and activities. The information on this page is designed to assist first year students and their families in understanding the differences between the guidelines established for disability accommodations in secondary school versus post-secondary school.
