Accessing Disability Support Services
If you are a student in need of academic accommodations as a result of a disability, you may access DSS services by:
- First submitting relevant documentation related to your disability. Guidelines for documentation are found here.
When DSS has received your documentation, we will contact you via campus mail, directing you to make an appointment with us to complete paperwork and meet with a Disability Support Services staff member.
After registering with DSS, you will be able to request your accommodations online each semester. DSS staff will review and approve your accommodations, and your current professors will be notified via email of your accommodations. (Instructions for requesting your accommodations online are found here.) Only pertinent information will be released (i.e., a list of accommodations to be provided to the student). The nature of one's disability is never disclosed to faculty.
Disability Support Services staff members serve as advocates ensuring that students who qualify for support services receive the appropriate accommodations. Accommodations will be determined based on the individualized needs of the student, any relevant diagnoses and the recommendations made by the professional who conducted the disability evaluation. Examples of accommodations provided to students with disabilities include: extended test time, a testing area with reduced distractions, note takers and ADA-compliant housing. Ample time is required to plan for on-campus services, so students should contact Counseling Services as soon as possible.
If you have questions about these procedures or require more information, please call 727-864-8248 or email dss@eckerd.edu.
