The Program for the 11th Annual Environmental Film Festival is now online!
"Eckerd College's "Visions of Nature/Voices of Nature," Environmental Film Festival is now in its eleventh year, and the program is as exciting and timely as ever. Once again we are screening important documentary and feature films from around the world in which themes relating to the environment and to our human connection with nature are prominent.
Prior to the festival, on February 19th, the International Cinema series will feature a film that ties into the theme of the festival, by highlighting the contrast between patterns of nature and the conventional patterns of everyday life. Carlos Reygadas' "Silent Light" opens and closes with a powerful image of the slow changes of light that take place at dawn and dusk, respectively, and the film explores the ways in which situations in everyday life can interrupt the harmony of a life adapted to the regularity of nature.
The first film of the festival itself brings back to campus a dedicated ally of the festival, Prof. Jim Deutsch of the Smithsonian Institution, who will introduce and lead a discussion of Werner Herzog's latest exploration of eccentric peoples and their explorations in "Encounters at the End of the World."
The program will bring scholars and filmmakers from close to home and far away, and will screen films that have been critically acclaimed around the world, including a film that is currently nominated for the Oscar for best documentary and another that had its World Premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, just weeks ago. There is a program designed to appeal especially to children, a program devoted to short films, and all films and speakers were chosen to be entertaining as well as informative.
All films and programs are free and open to the public.
