Enjoy a Greek meal and soak up the atmosphere at Tarpon Springs, an historic waterfront community influenced by Greek sponge divers. Visit historic Ybor City, once the "Cigar Capital of the World," and experience Cuban, Italian, German and Jewish immigrant influences and sample traditional Cuban foods. Marvel at the beauty of Florida's flora and fauna and the mysteries of aquatic life. Exit the classroom and go "behind-the-scenes" in Tampa Bay.

Life in the 1950's

The 1950’s ushered in a decade of unprecedented prosperity, along with fears created by the specter of the Iron Curtain and The Bomb.  Revisit this era when gas was 26 cents, bread 17 cents, and America was the king of the auto industry.  Recall advances made in medicine (polio vaccine, the golden age of antibiotics).  Follow the emergence of Rock and Roll as a defined music style and see it compete with traditional sounds of pop singers from the Big Band Era.  Study the performing arts – drama, musical theatre, film, and the emerging “art” of TV.  We’ll also explore the impact of McCarthyism, blacklisting, the Hollywood Ten; civil rights court decisions (Brown vs. the Board of Education); and the Federal Highway Act that led to flowering of the suburbs.
