Film at Eckerd College
Eckerd College Environmental Film Festival
The Visions of Nature, Voices of Nature Environmental Film Festival brings compelling and important films to the Tampa Bay area and the Eckerd College community in order to raise awareness and promote discussion of questions relating to nature, place, and the environment.
International Cinema Series at Eckerd College
The International Cinema Series presents critically acclaimed and important films from around the world (including independent and artistic American films) every week in the Miller Auditorium at Eckerd College. We show restorations of honored classics as well as contemporary films that have captured the attention of critics at recent film festivals.
Through a generous gift from Dan and Mary Miller '97, the Miller Auditorium underwent a transformation in 2004 to become a state of the art theater. Features include:
- New 16/35 mm Ernemann Projector - shows virtually any film
- DVD and VHS tape video projection capabilities
- 12' x 26' projection screen
- 16 JBL surround speakers
- 3 JBL cinema stage speakers
- Complete system for the hearing impaired
- 374 upholstered, cushioned seats
Eckerd at Sundance
Almost every year, a small group of students from Eckerd College takes a trip to the Sundance Film Festival to learn the ins and outs of American independent film.
The trip is part of the Eckerd College Winter Term course “Beyond Hollywood? American Independent Film and the Sundance Film Festival". We spend two weeks in sunny Florida, covering the history of independent film from the 1970s to today — roughly from Easy Riders to sex, lies and videotape to Napoleon Dynamite (which debuted at Sundance during the second year of the trip, in January 2004).
Then we hit the road for Park City, Utah and the 10-day festival. We watch films, hang out, talk to filmmakers, watch more films…. In the past students have written up reviews of the films they saw and handed them to me, occasionally posting updates of the experience on the web. This year we will all be reporters, clueing you in about the latest information and gossip (in NEWS), our exciting encounters with cool people and adventures in Park City (in FUN), and, of course, about which films to watch for and which to avoid (in REVIEWS).
