Eckerd's Composting Program

In the Fall of 2011, Eckerd's first comprehensive composting program was started. With money from the Carbon Offset Fund, over 200 gallons of compost tumblers were purchased for the Community Vegetable Garden. The Offset Fund money also went to purchase compost collection bins for the main cafeteria as well as for the common rooms of all dorms. Collection is completely student-led and based off of volunteers coordinated through the Service-Learning Office. Over 6,000 gallons of organic matter were collected during the 2013-14 school year. All of it was composted on campus behind the student vegetable garden. Soil can then be used by the garden and other community members who want nutrient rich dirt.
