Q. What is a animal?
A. Cats, dogs (under 40 pounds), rabbits, ducks, and ferrets are considered animals, and must be properly registered with the Pet Life Staff before residing on campus. Any cat or dog living on campus must be at least 1 year old and have lived with the student's family for at least ten months prior to living on campus. The acquisition of a dog or cat, purchased or stray, while a student at Eckerd, is prohibited. Animals are only allowed in one of the animal friendly houses.
Q. What is a small pet?
A. Fish, small birds, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, amphibians, and reptiles are considered small pets and must be properly registered. Small pets are permitted in all complexes.
Q. How old must my cat or dog be to live on campus?
A. Your pet must be a year old and have been in your family for at least ten months.
Q. What is the weight limit of my cat or dog living on campus?
A. Forty pounds is the maximum weight allowed for a cat or dog on campus.
Q. Does my cat or dog need to be on a leash?
A. Cats and dogs must be on a leash at all times while on campus.
Q. Can I bring a animal as a freshman/transfer student to campus?
A. You are allowed to bring a pet after attending Eckerd College for one semester and it meets the requirements of the Eckerd College Pet Policy.
Q. Does my cat or dog have to be spayed or neutered?
A. Your pet has to be spayed or neutered at the time of registration and veterinarian certification is required.
Q. Are there any dog breeds not allowed on campus?
A. Pitbull, rottweiler, wolf breeds, any aggressive breed, or any mix containing these are not allowed on campus at any time.
Q. How much does it cost to register a animal on campus?
A. The cost is $125.00 for the academic year.
Q. Can a friend bring a animal to campus to visit?
A. Yes, a written request must be submitted to the Pet Life Staff one week prior to arrival and it must be approved in writing.
Q. When I bring my animal to campus how long do I have to register?
A. You must register your pet within five academic days with pet council.
Q. How many animals or small pets can I have on campus?
A. One animal or two small pets per owner are permitted on campus.

Q. Is there a College veterinarian that conducts health checks on the animals?
A. Yes. The College works with a local veterinarian to conduct health checks twice a year. We use Dr. James Lutz from Largo Veterinary Hospital. He has been a great addition to our Pet Life program.
