This course offers an interdisciplinary and experiential study of Peru's political history and its search for a cohesive national identity in the face of complex geographic, ethno-cultural, and socio-economic divisions. Through novels and essays by well-known Peruvian writers as well as films, contemporary scholarship and extensive in-country travel, we will explore Peru’s history, culture, economic development, and politics. Particular themes include the geographic divisions between coast, sierra and jungle, the role of violence in Peruvian history, the "Indian Question" in Peru's political history and indigenous political identity today, and the challenges of inclusive economic and political development in an era of globalization. The travel component includes stays in Lima, Ayacucho, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, and more
